Museum is the one of types of public space, which requires high interests in art and demand for spending time unlike other public spaces including the public park, theater, cafe and even library. This unique trait of the museum build up the unvisible barrier between the museum and common people who are not interested in art and feel reluctant to interpret what art is. Then how can the museum open itself up for common people having less intention enjoying artworks while spending their precious time? Can it be just a part of the landscape of city?
To bring out the ideas, the wellknown museum architecture and famous graphic design were taken as references, the measure to implicit publicity into specific forms like space, graphic and etcetra. Inviting people in wide age spectrum to the museum had to be important, and I considered it as publicity the museum must contain. I wanted configuration of programs to be seperated but have potential to be integrated later at the same time. I believed that flexibility will make the place where all kinds of people can enjoy and walk around. And overall form of the museum required active form related with activities or landscapes to embrace publicity and programs.
Undulating form leads people get into the museum, they are led to walking along the curvature of slabs attracting them to 2nd floor and basement floor where have art exhibitions. The ground floor consists of cultural and educational programs. It can be a playground for children, a community place for seniors and youths, or a lecture place for visitors, and all activities and behaviors happening in the museum create an inspiring panorama. People can walk around, sit down, or lie down in a group or alone on an undulate floor with that panorama as the background.
The steel frames arranged in narrow interval and pre-stressed concrete system were considered as the structure systems for constructing wavy form. Reinforced concrete method used for normal floors in flat shape. Columns in 350mm diameter brought lightness of the museum out. For basement floor, 600mm square columns were used.
The double-skin facade with dotted patterns in gradient density was consciously designed for controlling the direct sun light so as to protect the artworks from the sun light and provide various visibility for people. The dotted patterns on the outermost glass, skins of facade, have different density in each height, the density of patterns is getting higher around exhibition area floor levels and is lower near the people’s eye level not to cover their view. The density were controlled with the size of dot and the distance between the upper dots and the lower dots.
